Zone of Protection

The Buxton Spring is surrounded by 500 square miles of beautiful unspoilt National Parkland. Because of its depth and long travel time, the Source does not require an aquifer protection policy to maintain its pollution free status. However, to guarantee its status, the Buxton Mineral Water Company has an agreement with the High Peak District Council to operate two "Protection Zones", which are stringently monitored and controlled.

The catchment area for Buxton water, East/South East of Buxton, has been designated a "Zone of Protection". Any activities in the zone, which could harm the Source are monitored and controlled by the High Peak Borough Council.

From the catchment area the water passes down through a fissured limestone aquifer which dips down beneath the town of Buxton at an angle of approximately 10 degrees.

Above the limestone aquifer is a layer of volcanic lava. This has the effect of confining the water to the limestone region and protecting the aquifer from surface contamination.

At an approximate depth of 1500m the layers are faulted. This allows a vertical passage of water upwards to the spring outlet in the centre of Buxton.
