Buxton Water and the big cycling festival: the 2016 Prudential RideLondon

Chances are you’ve heard about the incredible celebration that is the 2016 Prudential RideLondon event – and hopefully you got to go! Because it was glorious.

Last Saturday, London’s streets were awash with wheels as families dug out their bikes and joined the fun.

An impressive 70,000 cyclists saddled-up, and we were on the lookout for the very best in show ready for our competition.

We snapped away, asking the lovely people of the Twitter-sphere to have their say and vote for the best fancy dress. After much deliberation, we picked a truly deserving winner: Craig. Now how’s that for an ensemble

The cycle route flowed through the capital, with 7 Festival Zones to weave through. One of our favourites was right in the middle of Green Park. Why so? Well, with stunt shows, demos and some very impressive World Record breaking skills, it was pretty epic. And we were there.

Let the trials begin

At the Trial Arena, we hosted the international Urban Trials competition.

Full of revitalising Buxton vibes, the crowd cheered on the riders. The arena filled with oohs and ahhs, as top stunt rider Andrei Burton (so nearly a ‘Buxton’) and the world champions grabbed our Buxton-replica obstacles by the handles.

We brought our lovely little town to the Big City, with almost life-size creations of its landmarks. And it was beyond brilliant – with world champion riders; Andrei Burton, Kenny Belaey, Théau Coutès, Joe Seddon, Joseph Prattley, Zhao Xuan and Jan Kocis taking the stage.

Burton braced himself to break three, yes three, records: Highest side hop onto a target, highest drop onto a target and most jumps over a bar in 30 seconds. And by 10am, he did it! That’s one pumped up feeling.

“Three world records before breakfast – how good is that” – said Burton.

Ready, set, pedal

The fun didn’t stop there. Come Sunday the cycling stepped up a gear, it was ride day. 30,000 came far and wide to place their tyres on the line, filled with vitality and ready to face 46 or 100 miles of twisting road.

With such a challenge ahead, we did what us Buxtonites do best – we kept everyone pumped up.

As our focused riders approached the infamous Box Hill, our cheeky signs worked hand-in-hand with those natural endorphin to make every push more powerful. And you can see why…

The beastly hill out of the way, spirits were high and we were with the riders every spin of the way!

What a weekend! A wonderful celebration of cycling and all the uplifting goodness it brings – we like it a lot. Hopefully you had a top time top – and if you missed it, you can catch the highlights via our Twitter channel and Facebook. Now, on your bike and see you at Prudential Ride London next year!
