The Power of Hydration for Your Health and Wellbeing
BUXTON is proud to partner with Mind Charity in 2023, to support the Sweat and Tears of 15 Rise Up Runners. These are all real people, who all face the mental and physical struggles of life. Each and every one of them are showcasing their unique resilience by taking part in the London Marathon. Their journey to the finish line will be one of many twists and turns, but one that will be conquered through sheer determination. Resilience, determination and fulfilment are at the forefront of BUXTON and Mind’s mission to promote better physical and mental well-being across the nation.
So, if you want to know how to stay hydrated during the day or learn more about the importance of hydration for your health and well-being, take a look to find out!
Is water good for mental health and well-being?
Staying hydrated has many benefits for the mind too. Water enables your mood to remain more regular and it has been noted that some people’s sense of well-being dropped as a result of low hydration.
A fresh glass of water is great for our bodies as it sustains their functions and supports a healthy brain and mental resilience. Not only does hydration have a positive effect on our mental health, but it also supports our concentration, attention and memory.
How to stay hydrated throughout the day
The effects of water on the body will vary between people. It can also depend on factors such as how active a person is and the weather, age or gender. Through our collaboration with Mind charity, Sweat And Tears has shed light on the importance of hydration and its connection to mental well-being. This is why we wanted to make sure you knew how to stay hydrated throughout the day so that you can support your body and mind in the best way possible.
Eat more water-dense foods
Despite what people may think, it isn’t just the drinks we consume that keep us hydrated. Around 20% of our daily fluid intake comes from the foods we eat.
There are certain fruits and vegetables that contain great amounts of water as well as healthy nutrients. Fruits such as watermelon, peaches, strawberries and vegetables such as cucumber, celery, tomatoes and leafy greens are all great ways to get some extra levels of H20!
Drink, Train, Repeat!
Whilst working out the body loses large amounts of water. This does tend to vary from person to person, some tend to sweat more than others depending on their size, and gender. However, it is vitally important to stay hydrated whilst taking part in any form of physical exercise. Losing large amounts of fluid can be dangerous, which is why it’s important to drink more water when training.
Drink little and often
Gulping down large amounts of water in one sitting seems like an impossible task. But always remember the saying ‘little and often’ when it comes to hydration.
Consuming large amounts of water in quick succession is unpleasant, and can leave you feeling bloated and unwell. Your body can handle hydration better when it comes in smaller doses. Slow, and steady wins the race after all!
You can, of course, add a bit of extra flavour to your water by adding fruits such as lemon, lime or berries.
Track your water intake
This is something that will make your water intake habits stick. Staying hydrated throughout the day can be tricky for a number of reasons, but making sure to track how much you drink is a simple way to stay on top of it!
Don’t worry if you miss a drink or two, life does sometimes get in the way. However, tracking is a great way to keep yourself accountable.
Getting enough liquids into the body is key for seamless body and mind function. The body is mainly made up of water, which is why most of the things we do on a daily basis depend on hydration alone. However, by making a commitment to healthy hydration, you will ensure your body and mind stays resilient.
